I hope everyone enjoyed their Mother’s Day. My husband brought my three year old to pick out Mother’s Day gifts for me and my son blurted out what they got me within seconds of walking back into our house. It was so cute how excited he was. They spoiled me with a bunch of delicious goodies and a sweet handmade card. I also picked out a gift for myself. The gift that I picked out was some paint markers from Amazon. I was so super excited to try them out. My first project using them was this “Caterpillar To Butterfly Kids Counting Game.” I love mixing my son’s interests (in this case bugs) and learning into the activities we do.
How I Made This Caterpillar To Butterfly Kids Counting Game:
First, I began by cutting a long rectangular piece of cardboard out of a cereal box. I then drew a long line and numbers on it with a sharpie marker.
Next, I traced and cut out the caterpillar pieces and the butterfly. I then used my new paint markers to paint them. I didn’t think about the fact that I should have made the caterpillars different colors to better differentiate them during the game, so after the green paint dried, I added little different colored dots on their backs so we could tell the difference between them as we were playing.
Once all of the pieces were dry, I attached the butterfly to the rectangular cardboard strip and the caterpillars to clothespins. I used tape to do this but I would have preferred to use a hot glue gun. I just happened to be out of glue for my hot glue gun. Tape did work fine though.
Playing The Game:
To play the game, my son and I took turns rolling the dice. We would then count and move the caterpillar the number that we rolled. The first person to get their caterpillar to the butterfly wins!
What You Will Need:
Paint markers, cardboard (cereal box), clothes pin, tape or glue gun, sharpie marker, scissors, dice
Directions:
- Cut a long rectangle out of a cereal box
- Draw a long line and numbers on the rectangular piece of cardboard
- Draw and cut out of cardboard two caterpillars and a butterfly
- Paint the caterpillars and butterfly
- Once the paint is dry, glue or tape the caterpillars to the clothespins
- Glue or tape the butterfly to the rectangular cardboard piece
- Roll the dice and play the game!
